This magazine is well know for it’s Research Institute and good ‘integrity’, giving a ‘Good Housekeeping Seal’ only to top product/top sponsor.

This is from July 2010, but looks more from July 2007,  with no objectivity at all and same old story.

They ask for regulation, yes we want that, but we know that means extra taxes. In a mall, they don’t sell to kids, online you need a credit card. At they said it’s ‘at kids fingertips, i think it’s good, at lease kids know there’s an alternative to real, smelly cigarettes!

This is what the Michigan law say:

  • E-cigarettes (or electronic cigarettes) are battery-powered devices that provide inhaled doses of nicotine by way of a vaporized solution.
  • Current legal analysis concludes that because e-cigarettes do not contain tobacco, they are not covered under Michigan’s Smoke-Free Air Law, which takes effect May 1, 2010
  • Although e-cigarettes are not covered under Michigan’s smoke-free air law, businesses may set their own policy banning the use of e-cigarettes in their establishment. Based on the information below, we encourage businesses to consider adopting such a policy.
  • Businesses should be aware that e-cigarettes closely resemble real cigarettes. Therefore, it is possible that from a distance an individual may think that a person using an e-cigarette is smoking a real cigarette, which could trigger a complaint against a business related to the smoke-free air law
  • The e-cigarette is not a proven safe alternative to smoking and we discourage its use both for the user’s safety and the safety of the people in the same room.
  • The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has determined that e-cigarettes meet the definition of a combination drug device product and therefore should be regulated by the FDA. Currently e-cigarettes are not approved by the FDA and are considered illegal.

Suppliers, such as Njoy or Smoking Everywhere, were fighting the right of importing electronic cigarettes since months and today U.S. District Judge Richard J. Leon ruled that the devices are essentially a modern-day tobacco product and not subject to any restrictions (for the us importation) and said: “This case appears to be yet another example of FDA’s aggressive efforts to regulate recreational tobacco products as drugs or devices, unfortunately, its tenacious drive to maximize its regulatory power has resulted in its advocacy of an interpretation of the relevant law that I find, at first blush, to be unreasonable and unacceptable.” .

David Worely, of USACIG, Inc., stated, “USACIG’s new disposable electronic cigarette will retail for under $7.00 US in most US markets. USACIG and Hop-on are targeting Grocery Stores, C Stores, and Gas Stations and anywhere traditional cigarettes are being sold.”
This e-cigarette is manufactured in China but the nicotine cartridge and the packaging is made in USA by USACIG and will be submitted to the FDA for clinical studies (via Hop-on inc.).

“These are dangerous devices and I want to make sure our children are protected,” Wagner said. “I’m very concerned that young people who use these things will get hooked on the nicotine and eventually move onto the real thing, opening the door to a lifetime of expensive and debilitating health problems.”

So as you can read, it is not a full ban, it is more likely a way to regulate the sales of e-cigarettes (who says for new taxes?).
There is, however, some misinformation. The e-cigarette is a ‘dangerous devices’, ok i want to know why, Ms. or Dr. Wagner could please reveal your source because the last study from the FDA was overall not bad at all and the e-consumers are 100% satisfied (i made that up since i cannot find anyone unhappy about the e-cig :) ) and not complaining at all.
Where does the age of 19 came from? Isn’t it 21, for dangerous product (alcohol, for example)?
And banning in public places or at work: if the steam is bothering you have to explain why, because it is virtually odorless and safe!
I think it is the only smoking device who can accommodate non-smoker and smoker.
