Imperial Tobacco , Japan Tobacco International and British American Tobacco are going to seek a judicial review of the relevant sections of the Health Act 2009, in which the UK government is looking to impose the display ban to discourage smoking.
“If this misguided legislation is implemented it will simply fuel the growth in the illicit trade of tobacco and create a huge cost burden for retailers who are already under considerable pressure as a result of the difficult economic climate,” said Chief Executive Gareth Davis (IT) in a statement.

The Health Act 2009 requires cigarettes, cigars, pipe and roll-your own tobacco products to be hidden from view in England, Wales and Northern Ireland from October 2011 in large retailers and from October 2013 in smaller outlets.

Legislation review allows cigar smoking with provisions

Statement from the Michigan Dept. of Community Health:

“After further analysis of the law, the Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH) has concluded in a released memorandum that if cigar bars meet required criteria, they are exempt from the smoking ban and will be allowed to serve food and drink.

“In order to qualify for this exemption, the cigar bar must file an affidavit with the MDCH on or before May 31, 2010 stating that the cigar bar was in existence on May 1, 2010. Cigar bars must continue to file an affidavit with the MDCH on Jan. 31 each year to qualify for exemption. Cigar bars must meet the following requirements:

    * “In the 30-day period immediately preceding (April 1) the effective date of May 1, 2010, the cigar bar must generate 10 percent or more of its total gross annual income from the on-site sale of cigars AND the rental of on-site humidors.
* The cigar bar must be physically separated from any areas of the same or adjacent establishment in which smoking is prohibited. Smoke may not infiltrate into those non-smoking areas.
* The cigar bar must have an installed on-site humidor.
* The cigar bar must prohibit entry to a person under the age of 18 during the time the cigar bar is open for business.
* Cigars smoked on the premises must retail for more than $1 per cigar.
* The cigar bar must prohibit the smoking of all other tobacco products.”

Reynolds American (Camel, Kool, Winston etc…) today confirmed the buying of the Swedish Niconovum, which makes nicotine gum and other nicotine replacement products for $44M.
Reynolds said he proudly bought Niconovum “to provide adult tobacco consumers with innovative cessation products that have the potential to reduce the risks of diseases and death caused by tobacco use”.
What he forgot to say it’s the total inefficiency of nicotine gum or patch to help quit smoking for the majority of smokers, and the prohibitive price!
For all smokers who want quit, reduce or find alternative to tobacco the only working product so far is call an electronic cigarette or e-cigarette (And by the way Ruyan is actively looking for a partner…).
